Sacraments

The sacraments are special signs of God's love: an outward sign of an inward reality. The Catholic Church celebrates seven sacraments, grouped into three families.

Sacraments of Initiation

Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist welcome us into the Christian community and nourish our life of faith.

Baptism

"Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons and daughters of God, we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission" (CCC 1213).

Celebrated during Mass, approximately once a month. Adults and children age 7 and older seeking baptism prepare through our RCIA or RCIC program instead. See Baptism for details.

Holy Communion (Eucharist)

The Sacrament of the Eucharist is the "source and summit of the Christian life." Through the Sacrament of the Eucharist, Jesus Christ is fully present, both physically and spiritually, when consecrated bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ during the sacrifice of the Holy Mass.

See First Reconciliation & First Communion for details on First Holy Communion at St. Michael's.

Confirmation

Like the Sacrament of Baptism, "Confirmation is only given once, for it too imprints on the soul an indelible spiritual mark ... which is a sign that Jesus Christ has marked a Christian with a seal of his Spirit by clothing him with power from on high" (CCC 1304), so that one has the power to "profess faith in Christ publicly and, as it were, officially" (CCC 1305).

Confirmation "is the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost," where those who are confirmed receive an increase in the gifts of the Holy Spirit (CCC 1302).

See Confirmation for details.

Sacraments of Healing

Reconciliation (Confession)

The Catholic sacrament wherein the faithful are absolved of their sins by confessing them to a priest and, through the power of "the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit," the person who confesses is granted absolution and healing from their sins.

See our Mass Times page for when Reconciliation is available at St. Michael's, or learn more about the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Anointing of the Sick

"Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up" (CCC 1513).

The Anointing of the Sick "is not a sacrament only for those who are at the point of death. Hence, as soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived" (CCC 1514). It's not only for the elderly – even young people can ask for this sacrament, for example if they are about to undergo a serious operation or are terminally ill.

Call the Parish Office to request Anointing for yourself or a loved one. Do not wait until the final moments before death. If calling after office hours, follow the emergency prompts.
